Carney addressed the Economic Club of New York as Canada, the US, and Mexico are on the eve of negotiating a new trade treaty. He argued that a stronger and independent Canada will be of benefit to the US.

According to Anadolu Agency, Carney emphasized that "Canada Strong will help make America great again," asserting the importance of Canada's internal strength in response to US President Donald Trump's significant shifts in tariffs and trade policies. Carney highlighted the increasing global division and danger, which he believes necessitates Canada's pursuit of its status as an energy superpower. He clarified that this does not indicate a severance of ties with the US but instead a desire for a 'true partnership' focusing on sectors impacted by Trump's tariff policies.

Carney listed essential resources and products the US needs from Canada, including oil, natural gas, electricity, and industrial metals. He advocated for enhanced cooperation between the two countries in these sectors. "That is mutual strength," Carney stated, reinforcing his view that "Canada Strong will help make America great again" through collaboration and global competition.

Furthermore, Carney noted a shift in Canada's trade strategy, indicating a move towards diversifying its partnerships beyond the US.
