Rio de janeiro: Chinese Premier Li Qiang urged BRICS countries to become the vanguard in advancing global governance reform by prioritizing "independence and self-reliance" and focusing on development and economic growth. This call to action was reported by state media during the plenary session of "Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance" at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to Anadolu Agency, Li addressed the economic bloc, emphasizing the need to safeguard world peace and facilitate the peaceful resolution of disputes. The meeting, presided over by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, was attended by leaders of BRICS countries.

Li highlighted the rapid changes occurring globally, which challenge international rules and order and diminish the authority of multilateral institutions. In light of increasing unilateralism and protectionism, BRICS leaders stressed the importance of enhancing solidarity, defending the UN Charter's principles, and practicing multilateralism to contribute to global governance and lasting peace.

As the leading force of the Global South, Li encouraged BRICS nations to uphold independence, demonstrate responsibility, and focus on building consensus. He urged the bloc to seek fundamental solutions based on the merits of each issue and to concentrate on development to stimulate economic growth.

China expressed its readiness to collaborate with BRICS countries to guide global governance towards a "more just, equitable, efficient, and orderly direction," aiming to collectively build a better world. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration of the 17th BRICS Summit.
