New york: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has affirmed China's commitment to support Cuba's economic development and improve the livelihood of its people amidst ongoing US sanctions on the Caribbean nation.
According to Anadolu Agency, Wang Yi made these remarks during a meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodrguez, on the sidelines of a high-level UN Security Council meeting in New York. The meeting, reported by Beijing-based Xinhua News, highlighted China's stance against external interference and its support for Cuba's sovereignty and rights.
Wang emphasized China's dedication to upholding justice for Cuba and contributing positively to its economic and social challenges. He also praised the Cuban people for their resilience and determination in defending their rights against external blockades and interference, which he noted has garnered international respect.
In response, Rodrguez thanked China for its steadfast support in safeguarding Cuba's sovereignty and security. He expressed gratitude for China's assistance and advocacy during challenging times, noting that Cuba is experiencing its most difficult period since the revolution due to US-imposed blockades and sanctions.
Rodrguez reiterated Cuba's support for China's positions on Taiwan and other international matters. The meeting also coincided with China's recent delivery of a 15,000-ton rice shipment to Cuba, a vital contribution as the island nation grapples with economic difficulties and fuel shortages.
Cuba is enduring a fuel crisis following a US oil embargo imposed on January 30, which has led to widespread electricity shortages and power outages. China has consistently opposed US sanctions on Cuba and has called for the lifting of such restrictions to alleviate the Caribbean nation's hardships.
