New York: China expressed support at a UN Security Council meeting for all initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine war, including an agreement between the US and Russia to initiate peace talks, state media reported.

According to Anadolu Agency, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, emphasized the importance of dialogue over confrontation during the meeting. He stated, "China expects all parties and stakeholders to participate in the peace talks at an appropriate time, so as to find a just and lasting solution that takes into account each other's concerns and to reach a binding peace agreement acceptable to all parties concerned."

Despite differing positions, Fu highlighted China's support for the US-Russia agreement to commence peace talks, reiterating that peace negotiations are preferable to ongoing conflict. US President Donald Trump previously indicated his intention to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war through discussions.

Fu also urged Europe to contribute to peace efforts by addressing the root causes of the crisis and establishing a balanced and sustainable security framework to ensure long-term stability on the continent. Furthermore, he noted China's readiness to actively engage in the political resolution of the crisis, taking into account the concerns of the international community, especially those from the Global South.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a "swift end" to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and advocating for lasting peace. The resolution expressed sorrow over the loss of life during the three-year war and reaffirmed the UN's mission of maintaining international peace and security. It stressed the importance of resolving the conflict in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter, while notably omitting any explicit reference to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
