China to Deploy Special Envoy for Middle East Mediation Efforts

Beijing: China is set to deploy a special envoy to the Middle East to facilitate mediation efforts amidst escalating tensions in the region, as announced by the country's foreign minister.

According to Anadolu Agency, Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, disclosed this development during a phone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. Wang emphasized the importance of mediation during their discussion, as reported by China's state-run Xinhua News Agency.

In another conversation with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Wang underscored that even amid conflicts, the protection of civilians must remain a priority. He further reiterated Beijing's support for resolving regional disputes through diplomatic channels.

The tensions in the Middle East have intensified following the US and Israel's airstrikes on Iran, which began on February 28. These strikes have resulted in over 850 fatalities, including Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and more than 150 elementary schoolgirls, as confirmed by Iranian authorities. In retaliation, Iran has carried out drone and missile attacks on US-affiliated sites in Gulf countries, leading to multiple casualties, including six US service members.

Wang conveyed to Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar that military action against Iran is not a viable solution to the crisis. He also advised Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to consider the concerns of neighboring countries during their recent phone conversation.

China has consistently voiced opposition to the US and Israeli military actions against Iran. During a United Nations Security Council meeting earlier this week, China condemned attacks on children in conflict zones, following reports of an Israeli airstrike that resulted in the deaths of numerous schoolgirls in Iran.
