Munich: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed support for diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine war during a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
According to Anadolu Agency, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of the longstanding friendship between China and Ukraine, stating that Beijing is committed to enhancing cooperation in multiple sectors. He reiterated China's dedication to the foundational principles of diplomatic relations, which include mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation.
Wang Yi highlighted recent diplomatic initiatives and dialogues concerning the Ukraine crisis, describing them as promising. He also announced China's intention to deliver a new batch of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. His comments coincided with Moscow's announcement of the next round of trilateral peace negotiations involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine, scheduled to occur in Geneva from February 17 to 18.
The announcement follows previous US-mediated peace discussions conducted in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in January and earlier this month. China has emerged as Ukraine's foremost trading partner and primary import source, with bilateral trade amounting to $21 billion in the past year. The diplomatic relationship between the two nations dates back to 1992.
