Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held talks in Beijing on Tuesday, aiming to deepen trade relations despite ongoing differences over regional security and human rights.

According to Anadolu Agency, Xi highlighted that the bilateral ties between China and Australia have "turned around" after a challenging period from 2020 to 2022. He mentioned that the progress in relations has brought "tangible benefits" to both nations. Xi emphasized the importance of "equal treatment" and "seeking common ground while sharing differences," which might refer to previous issues such as Canberra's restrictions on Chinese investments and the federal government's action against Chinese company Landbridge regarding the Port of Darwin.

Xi noted that the China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership has entered its second decade, expressing China's readiness to further advance relations for mutual benefit. He stated that treating each other as equals and engaging in mutually beneficial cooperation aligns with the fundamental interests of both countries.

Prime Minister Albanese, during his week-long visit to China, stressed the importance of dialogue in maintaining peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the region. He expressed gratitude to Xi for the hospitality extended to him and his partner Jodie Haydon.

Albanese also met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, discussing economic, trade, technological innovation, and green development relations. Li expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation planning, explore economic growth opportunities, and enhance communication to promote a favorable international economic and trade environment.

Albanese reiterated the benefits of "free and open trade" for both economies, highlighting Australia's eagerness to deepen cooperation with China. Following the talks, cooperation agreements were signed in areas such as trade, agriculture, tourism, and customs inspection.

This visit marks Albanese's second trip to China since his party's election in 2022, after being reelected with a significant majority in May.
