Brussels: The EU foreign policy chief has called on Israel to take definitive action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, warning that the European Union is ready to respond if Israel does not fulfill its commitments. Speaking after an EU foreign ministers' meeting, Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for a ceasefire and the release of hostages as top priorities.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas stated that the EU will monitor Israel's implementation of its pledges, with updates every two weeks. She presented potential measures that the EU might consider if Israel fails to improve conditions in Gaza. Kallas clarified that the aim is not punitive but to enhance the humanitarian situation in the region.

Kallas acknowledged some progress due to a recent EU-Israel aid agreement, noting increased aid deliveries and ongoing electricity repairs. However, she insisted that further concrete actions are necessary from Israel to better the humanitarian situation.

Additionally, Kallas reiterated the EU's position against Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons, advocating for diplomacy and the resumption of talks, along with the return of United Nations inspectors to Iran.

On other matters, Kallas condemned Russia's intensified bombing campaign in Ukraine and mentioned the EU's plans for a stringent sanctions package against Russia. Despite progress, she expressed disappointment over the EU's inability to finalize the sanctions package, pending Slovakia's approval.

Kallas welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement of additional weapon supplies to Ukraine, urging a shared financial responsibility among the US, Europe, and Canada. She also noted discussions on Georgia's democratic challenges and potential EU measures in response, including visa and agreement suspensions.
