Srinagar: At least four people are dead and many are injured after a cloudburst triggered massive flooding in a remote village located in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, a senior minister said Sunday. The cloudburst struck the Janglote area of Kathua district during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who is a member of parliament from Udhampur-Kathua-Doda Lok Sabha constituency, confirmed the death toll and reported damage in the area. He stated that the situation is being continuously monitored, with civilian administration, military, and paramilitary forces actively involved in response efforts.

The region's top elected official, Omar Abdullah, highlighted that landslides have occurred in several parts of Kathua district. He emphasized that the administration is engaged in immediate relief, rescue, and evacuation measures to assist those affected by the flooding.

This incident marks the second cloudburst in the region this week. Rescue operations are underway to locate the missing after another cloudburst struck Chositi village in Kishtwar district, resulting in at least 65 deaths and over 100 injuries, according to officials.

Meanwhile, the death toll this year from monsoon rains and related incidents in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has surpassed 260, as per an official statement released Sunday. Heavy monsoon rains typically begin in India in June and culminate in September.
