Colombia: Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced that authorities have captured a woman identified as alias 'Claudia' or 'La India,' described by police as the financial chief of a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). De la Espriella characterized the capture as 'a major blow to the criminal finances' of the group, highlighting her role in managing substantial funds derived from illicit activities such as drug trafficking, extortion, and illegal gold trading.
According to Anadolu Agency, 'La India' was apprehended in Santander de Quilichao, located in Colombia's southwestern Cauca department. She is reportedly associated with the armed group led by Nestor Vera Fernandez, known by the alias 'Ivan Mordisco.' Authorities have stated that she managed funds ranging between 12 billion and 15 billion Colombian pesos, which are allegedly used to support and maintain the group's criminal operations.
Authorities further allege that 'La India' collected revenues from illegal mining activities and managed a clandestine airstrip in Amazonas, which facilitated drug transportation to Brazil. The investigation also links her to properties allegedly used for accommodating leaders and members of the armed group, including minors reportedly recruited by the organization.
President de la Espriella emphasized his directive to security forces to capture or neutralize Mordisco and dismantle his criminal network. He affirmed the government's stance against crime and narco-terrorism, stating that the state will not yield to such threats.
This capture occurs amidst intensified government efforts to combat FARC dissident groups that have rejected the 2016 peace agreement. Mordisco leads the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), recognized as one of the largest FARC dissident organizations in Colombia, engaged in drug trafficking, illegal mining, extortion, and other unlawful activities.
