Palestinian Prisoners’ Group Calls for International Action Over Israeli Execution Preparations

Jerusalem: The head of the Palestinian Prisoner Society, Abdullah al-Zaghari, on Wednesday called for 'effective international action' following reports that Israel had begun designating a wing for Palestinian prisoners sentenced to death, including a room for carrying out executions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zaghari stated that this move is part of the 'continued determination of the Israeli occupation system' to turn incitement and legislation it had approved into practical measures aimed at executing Palestinian prisoners. He described the preparations to implement the 'racist' law as constituting a 'crime against humanity' and part of efforts to use Palestinian prisoners 'as a political bargaining chip.'

Zaghari also placed responsibility on the international community for the continuation of such practices, citing the 'international silence' that had allowed Israel to perpetuate its repressive measures. The office of far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced on Tuesday that the first wing for Palestinian prisoners sentenced to death was being designated, which would include a special room for carrying out executions, as reported by Israel's private broadcaster Channel 24.

The broadcaster notes that Israel last carried out the death penalty in 1962 with the execution of Nazi official Adolf Eichmann. Since its establishment in 1948 on lands seized by armed Zionist militias, Israel has been a contentious entity, displacing at least 750,000 Palestinians and occupying the remaining Palestinian territories. Despite UN resolutions calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state, Israel has refused to withdraw from these areas.
