Ankara: Colombian President Gustavo Petro urged the people of Israel to demand an end to their government's strikes in Lebanon, while he expressed full support for the recent US-Iran memorandum of understanding. Petro emphasized the importance of respecting the agreement, which he believes represents "more life for the world."

According to Anadolu Agency, Petro criticized the Israeli administration for continuing to attack Lebanon despite diplomatic progress. Colombia currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, and Petro called for global support for US President Donald Trump in ending the ongoing conflict. He emphasized the need for Israelis to persuade their government to stop attacking neighboring countries, urging them to view these nations as "brothers and sisters" instead of adversaries.

Petro's comments come amidst ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, despite a ceasefire. Official figures indicate that since March 2, Israel's military actions in Lebanon have resulted in over 4,000 deaths, 11,873 injuries, and the displacement of more than one million residents. Israel continues to occupy areas in southern Lebanon, with some territories held for decades and others seized during the latest conflict. The recent military campaign saw Israeli forces advance more than 10 kilometers (6 miles) into Lebanese territory.
