Colombian President Requests Suspension of US Tariffs Following Earthquake


Colombia: Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella on Saturday requested US President Donald Trump to temporarily suspend the high tariffs imposed on Colombia, expressing gratitude for the United States’ economic support following a devastating earthquake.



According to Anadolu Agency, during a 10-minute phone call, President Espriella thanked President Trump for the assistance provided in rescue and aid operations after the earthquake. President Trump offered his condolences for the lives lost and expressed his solidarity with the affected Colombian families. Espriella shared on US social media platform X that he communicated Colombia’s challenges and the dire economic situation he inherited, emphasizing the country’s commitment to reconstruction efforts.



The conversation was described as friendly and cordial, with Trump expressing affection for Colombia and sympathy for its people. President Espriella highlighted the importance of the alliance between Colombia and the US, emphasizing its necessity for rebuilding the nation. The earthquake, which struck on August 10 with a magnitude of 7.4, has resulted in a death toll of 294.
