Continuing the efforts to break the deadlock and resume the peace talks for a solution to the Cyprus problem remains a top priority, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday, delivering a greeting at an event hosted by the Association of Unaccompanied Children in Greece 1974-1979. The book titled 'Thank you…' by Niovi Kerkidou was presented during the event. The President noted that despite difficulties and challenges, we remain optimistic that our persistent efforts and clear political will, will lead to the resumption of the negotiations. He pledged once again that he will take advantage of every opportunity to create the conditions for the resumption of the talks. President Christodoulides said that there is a consistency between words and deeds, referring to the measures announced for the Turkish Cypriots, the consent given by the Cyprus Republic for the participation of the Turkish FM at the informal Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels and our readiness which is constantly demonstrated. He said once again that he is ready for a tripartite meeting with the UNSG and the Turkish Cypriot leader on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and added that Greece remains Nicosia's most stable ally. The President referred to the wounds of the Turkish invasion and the fact that five thousand children between the ages of 6 and 17 years old were left without education. He said that all these students found refuge in Greece and were hosted by Greek families between 1974-1979. He congratulated the author of the book who depicts the reality of those years and her gratitude to the Greek families. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Numerous peace talks under the aegis of the UN with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof, have failed to yield results. Source: Cyprus News Agency
