Cuba Condemns New US Sanctions as ‘Collective Punishment’

Havana: Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has voiced strong opposition to the recent "unilateral coercive measures" imposed by the United States.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rodriguez stated that the actions taken by the US demonstrate an intention to impose "collective punishment" on the Cuban people. The remarks were made following US President Donald Trump's executive order that introduced new sanctions targeting individuals and entities associated with Cuba. The US cited concerns over threats to American national security and foreign policy as reasons for the sanctions.

Rodriguez highlighted the timing of the announcement, noting it coincided with International Workers' Day on May 1, a day marked by significant demonstrations in Cuba. He pointed out that millions of Cubans participate in rallies that condemn the US blockade and what he termed as an 'energy siege' against the island.

He further criticized the US government's actions, suggesting they were aimed at punishing the Cuban population, which he claimed is resisting US imperialism. Rodriguez asserted that these measures are extraterritorial and violate the United Nations Charter, arguing that the US has no authority to impose sanctions on Cuba or third parties.

A United Nations spokesperson cautioned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Cuba, as the energy crisis continues to disrupt essential services. The nation is grappling with a fuel shortage following a US oil embargo initiated on January 30, which has led to extensive power outages.

President Trump has previously indicated that Cuba is a target following the US military operations in Iran, suggesting that the Caribbean nation will soon face failure.
