Cyberattack Targets Butcher Shop’s Refrigeration System in Athens

Athens:A butcher shop located in the Kifisia district of Athens was allegedly targeted in a cyberattack, where hackers gained access to the shop's refrigeration control system, reportedly setting the temperature to a staggering 150°C (302°F).

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the incident was reported by the shop's owner, Giorgos Boumpas. Employees discovered the issue early in the morning, initially suspecting a malfunction in the refrigeration units. Upon investigation by a refrigeration technician, it was determined that the systems had been hacked.

Boumpas explained that the hackers had set the refrigerators to 150°C, rendering manual intervention impossible as they could not access the system. It took the technician two hours to regain control of the situation. The technician informed them of similar incidents occurring at two other local businesses.

The butcher shop, along with the other affected businesses, collaborates with a third-party refrigeration company for security. Boumpas noted that while older refrigeration motors remained unaffected, newer models with wireless network connections were susceptible to such cyberattacks.

As a precautionary measure, the shop disabled its Wi-Fi connection. A technician is expected to evaluate and implement a permanent solution to prevent future cyber intrusions.
