Cyberattacks Target Refrigeration Systems in German Supermarkets

Reisbach:Berlin Hackers have targeted refrigeration systems in several German supermarkets, altering them from cooling to heating overnight. This incident follows a series of similar attacks across Europe, as reported by broadcaster Tagesschau.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the attacks occurred in supermarkets located in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, resulting in the disposal of large quantities of food. The CAP supermarkets, operated by the Workers' Welfare Association, confirmed one of the attacks. Both refrigerated shelves and storage areas outside the store were affected, and the attack reportedly targeted the company responsible for remotely maintaining the refrigeration systems.

In addition, police in Lower Bavaria are investigating a related incident at an Edeka branch in Reisbach, where there is suspicion of data espionage and manipulation. These attacks are part of a broader pattern affecting multiple European countries, including a butcher shop in Athens and the UK meat processing industry.

The incidents have prompted a criminal investigation in Belgium and have been reported in Sweden, Belgium, Estonia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, and possibly Finland. EU Agriculture and Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen described the attacks as a deliberate attempt to disrupt European food security, though he assured that food security is not at risk. Hansen emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen resilience throughout the supply chain.
