Cyprus President expresses hope New York meeting would yield positive results

Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, on Sunday expressed the hope that the tripartite meeting with the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish Cypriot leader, to be held on October 15 in New York, would yield positive results. In his speech at the memorial service of EOKA hero Nikolas Yiangou in Kato Polemidia, Limassol, President Christodoulides said that he makes the most of every contact for Cyprus. 'I am ready, I know very well our goals and aspirations, I know the limits of compromise and our red lines, and I hope that the tripartite meeting that will take place on October 15 will have positive results', he said. The President referred to his efforts for the restart of the talks. 'Methodically, systematically and in a coordinated way, we managed to trigger international interest, to bring Cyprus back to the forefront of developments, to make it a balancing factor and a corridor for humanitarian aid', he said. 'We managed, despite any adverse and negative conditions, to give new impetus to the Cyprus problem', he added. With the European acquis and the Security Council resolutions as our guide, he noted, and, on the basis of the agreed framework, 'we are working for the much-desired liberation and reunification of our country.' He expressed his conviction that, after the UN General Assembly, 'everyone now recognises the constructive approach of the Greek Cypriot side and focuses on the direction of Turkey for the resumption of meaningful talks based on the agreed framework.' At the same time, President Christodoulides, stressed the need to strengthen Cyprus in all sectors. 'Our country must be strong economically, politically, defensively and be prosperous. The strengthening of our state is a key condition, not only for the resumption of dialogue but also for achieving a functional and viable solution', he said. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiati ons, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Source: Cyprus News Agency
