Baku:International AI Summit Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis has issued a warning about the increasing risks associated with artificial intelligence, describing recent hacking incidents as 'early warning shots'. He emphasized the urgent need for companies and governments to enhance security measures as AI systems grow more powerful.
According to Anadolu Agency, Hassabis highlighted the dual nature of AI agents, which enhance technology's usefulness but also its risks. He pointed to recent hacking incidents as indicators of potential future threats and stressed the importance of improving security to prevent more serious incidents as AI systems become more autonomous.
Hassabis explained that as AI gains autonomy, ensuring that systems adhere to their assigned goals and safeguards becomes increasingly challenging. He cautioned that AI could be misused by malicious actors and advocated for testing systems in secure, isolated environments, drawing on containment practices from fields like biology and nuclear technology.
He suggested that trusted entities such as banks and governments should be given access to advanced AI tools before their public release. This would allow them to identify and fix vulnerabilities ahead of potential attackers. Hassabis also called for the establishment of an international standards body to keep pace with technological advancements and urged for significantly increased resources dedicated to AI safety and security.
