Accra:Fourteen Syrians were among the 16 crew members aboard a ship that sank following an aerial and maritime drone attack off the Bulgarian coast, as reported by the Syrian Sailors Union. The incident has left 11 sailors missing, and search operations are ongoing.
According to Anadolu Agency, the HS Dignity sank after being targeted by an aerial drone and two unmanned surface vessels. Rescue efforts have saved five crew members, while six boats and two helicopters continue to search for the others.
This attack follows Ukrainian accusations of Russian aggression against commercial vessels in the Black Sea. Previously, two commercial ships were attacked in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, resulting in the sinking of the Togo-flagged Alpha Watan and a fire aboard the Palau-registered Ebel.
There is confusion regarding the number of crew members involved in these incidents, with discrepancies noted between Syrian authorities and Bulgarian reports. The Syrian government has called for an independent investigation into the matter.
Bulgaria has summoned the Russian ambassador regarding these attacks, while Ukrainian officials have accused Moscow of threatening maritime security. Russia has denied any involvement in the recent incidents.
