St. petersburg: Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) signed a free trade agreement with Indonesia following a summit held in the Russian city of St. Petersburg. The meeting culminated in the signing of 20 documents, highlighting the EAEU's commitment to enhancing economic ties.

According to Anadolu Agency, the documents were signed after a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the highest governing body of the EAEU. This economic union was established under a treaty that became effective in January 2015. The free trade agreement was described as a pact "between the Eurasian Economic Union and its member states, on the one hand, and the Republic of Indonesia, on the other hand."

During the summit, a narrow-format meeting took place with the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as Armenia's prime minister. An expanded session later included Uzbekistan's president, along with the Cuban and Iranian ambassadors to Russia. Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso also participated in the council's proceedings.

The EAEU comprises member states Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Additionally, the union includes four observer states: Cuba, Iran, Moldova, and Uzbekistan. Moldova, in particular, has been seeking accession to the European Union since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022. It achieved candidate status later that year, and the European Council decided to initiate accession negotiations with Chisinau in December 2023.
