Germany: Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that charges have been brought against a former guard who served at a Syrian secret service prison during the regime of Bashar Assad. The charges include murder, torture, and deprivation of liberty, classified as crimes against humanity.

According to Anadolu Agency, the suspect, identified as Fahad A., was apprehended in the southwestern city of Pirmasens on May 27 and has been held in custody since his arrest. Fahad A. is accused of working in a secret service prison in Damascus from April 2011 to April 2012, during which he allegedly participated in over 100 interrogations where prisoners were subjected to severe physical abuse. The investigation indicates that at least 70 prisoners died due to the abuse and the dire conditions within the prison.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) had previously documented over 6,000 regime officers implicated in war crimes under Assad's regime. Assad, who led Syria for 24 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups seized control of Damascus, marking the end of the Baath Party's long-standing rule since 1963.
