Estonia Enhances Military Readiness Near Russian Border

Johvi:Estonia is relocating military units nearer to its border with Russia and enhancing its long-range strike capabilities as part of a new 'active defense' strategy.

According to Anadolu Agency, the First Brigade of the Estonian Defense Forces is being permanently moved from Tapa to Johvi, approximately 50 kilometers from the Russian border. To support this move, new facilities are being constructed in Johvi. Additionally, a military base is being built in Narva, a city close to the Russian border, which will have the capacity to house up to 1,000 personnel during a crisis.

Estonian military and intelligence officials have indicated that while they do not foresee Russia launching a full-scale war with NATO within the next two years, they are preparing for potential future conflicts and express concern about possible limited-scale operations against Estonia.

Estonia has signed contracts for nine US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and is also acquiring nine South Korean Chunmoo systems, both capable of firing missiles with ranges up to 300 kilometers. The country's defense spending is expected to increase by 42% this year to £2.4 billion ($2.8 billion), equivalent to 5.4% of its gross domestic product.
