Sanaa: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a significant advancement in EU-Ukraine relations with the signing of a drone cooperation agreement as part of an extensive defense industrial partnership. The announcement came during a ceremony in Kyiv on Ukraine's Statehood Day, emphasizing Ukraine's transformation from a security purchaser to a "net security provider" for Europe.
According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen highlighted the importance of this new collaboration, referring to it as the EU's "very own Drone Deal." The agreement is part of Ukraine's broader strategy, as the country has recently signed similar pacts with other nations, showcasing Ukraine's unique expertise in drone technology and anti-drone systems.
Von der Leyen emphasized the potential for mutual benefits, noting that Europe can contribute secure production sites, while Ukraine offers crucial battlefield experience. She stressed that this partnership could enhance joint production efforts and invigorate both defense industrial bases, promoting greater investment and production.
Additionally, the European Council revealed that the Commission has disbursed an extra £1 billion ($1.14 billion) to bolster Ukraine's drone capabilities. This funding is part of the larger Ukraine Support Loan, underlining Ukraine's ability to resist Russian aggression. The EU plans to continue its support with a £10 billion ($11.4 billion) disbursement plan, focusing on drones, missiles, and fighter aircraft.
During her visit, von der Leyen engaged in discussions regarding the integration of Ukrainian and European defense industries, Ukraine's EU accession process, and preparations for the upcoming winter. Her visit coincided with Ukraine's Statehood Day and the fifth Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit, marking her 11th trip to Ukraine since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed the Statehood Day ceremony, deeming the creation of a European anti-ballistic missile defense project as 'historic.' He expressed gratitude towards the US for granting Ukraine a license to produce Patriot missiles, calling it a 'historic' decision that would help save thousands of lives.
Zelenskyy underscored Ukraine's commitment to building an anti-ballistic system in Europe, aiming to protect the continent's skies. He highlighted Ukraine's capacity to produce millions of drones annually, emphasizing the success of the defense industry through collaboration with international partners.
The event in Kyiv was attended by several prominent figures, including the presidents of Albania, Moldova, and Romania, as well as the prime ministers of Croatia and Slovenia, signifying strong international support for Ukraine's defense initiatives.
