EU Leaders Urged to Adopt Stricter Migration Measures

Brussels:The European Commission president has called on EU leaders to implement stricter measures against irregular migration, including an emergency response framework and expanded powers for the bloc's border agency.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ursula von der Leyen addressed a letter to the leaders of all 27 member states ahead of the upcoming European Council summit in Brussels. She emphasized the need for measures to counteract situations where migration is used as a tool to destabilize the European Union.

Von der Leyen's proposals include the establishment of an emergency response framework for cases where migration is weaponized, the expansion of powers for the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, and an increase in the EU's deportation rate.

The letter follows a migration crisis in Spain's North African exclave of Ceuta over the summer, where approximately 70,000 migrants arrived from Morocco. The discussions on migration are scheduled to take place on the second day of the summit, this Friday.
