Brussels:European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed her support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal for a ceasefire aimed at protecting global food supplies and energy infrastructure.
According to Anadolu Agency, von der Leyen communicated her support through a post on the social media platform X following a discussion with Zelenskyy. She emphasized the importance of a ceasefire that safeguards essential resources in Ukraine and Russia.
Von der Leyen also highlighted the European Union's commitment to supporting Ukraine, mentioning that discussions on Ukraine's funding needs for the upcoming year will take place at the European Council meeting this week. Furthermore, she announced additional EU funding for drones and missiles to bolster Ukraine's defenses.
The call for a ceasefire comes in the wake of an announcement by US President Donald Trump, stating that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to halt attacks on each other's energy infrastructure. Trump urged both parties to adhere to the agreement.
Zelenskyy, reacting to the news, expressed surprise at the announcement but showed willingness for an energy ceasefire if Russia agrees. He requested clarification on the ceasefire's commencement from Trump, should it have been negotiated with Putin.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has also voiced support for the energy ceasefire on X. He criticized Russia for rejecting the ceasefire and escalating its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Macron reaffirmed France's continued support for Ukraine and President Zelenskyy.
