Helsinki: Finland's ban on cargo ships dumping wastewater into coastal waters will take effect Tuesday, according to public broadcaster YLE. This new regulation marks a significant step in marine environmental protection, prohibiting cargo ships from discharging toilet wastewater, sulfuric wash water, and scrubber sludge in Finnish coastal waters.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Finnish Parliament approved the amendment in December 2024, making Finland the first nation to enforce comprehensive wastewater regulations for cargo ships. While passenger ships have been subject to similar restrictions for some time, this regulation extends the environmental protections to cargo vessels as well.

The law includes extended transition periods, allowing for the discharge of greywater from sinks and showers into Finnish coastal waters for nearly five more years. However, wastewater dumping will still be permitted beyond Finland's territorial waters, indicating a phased approach to enforcing the new regulations.
