Adana: The flamingo population in Trkiye's eastern Mediterranean region has more than doubled compared to last year's midwinter waterbird census, reaching a total of 23,303. This remarkable increase was observed in the significant wetlands of the region, highlighting a positive trend for the species.
According to Anadolu Agency, a total of 311,945 waterbirds from 70 species were recorded during a synchronized census conducted in the southeastern provinces of Adana, Mersin, Hatay, and Osmaniye. These areas are part of the "Western Palearctic" region, which spans Europe, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and western Asia. The census, carried out by the Nature Research Association on behalf of the Nature Conservation and National Parks 7th Regional Directorate, documented the presence of 23,303 flamingos across 15 wetlands in the region.
The number of flamingos recorded last year was 11,268, indicating a 106.8% increase. The highest concentration of flamingos was found in Akyatan Lagoon in Adana's Karatas district. Hilmi Catal, deputy director of the 7th Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, shared insights from the mid-winter waterbird census, which was completed between January 17-22. He noted that the highest numbers were recorded for common coots, followed by teals and flamingos.
Catal described the increase in the flamingo population as 'very valuable,' attributing it to the protection and improvement of habitats. He emphasized ongoing conservation efforts in the Cukurova Delta, stating that the regional directorate actively implements measures such as strict conservation and monitoring activities, combating illegal hunting, and preventing ecosystem degradation.
