Turkish Foreign Minister Criticizes Israel’s Strategy Towards Neighbors

Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that Israel's approach to its neighbors poses a significant threat. In an interview with Britain's Financial Times, Fidan expressed concerns over Israel's recent military actions in southern Syria, labeling them as "a clear provocation."

According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan criticized Israel's perception of Arab and Muslim countries as threats, describing the strategy of weakening border states as unsustainable. He highlighted the PKK/YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as adversaries of Trkiye, underscoring Trkiye's commitment to addressing the terrorist threat. Fidan proposed that Trkiye might assume control over camps and prisons in northeastern Syria, currently managed by the PKK/YPG, to counter ISIS effectively.

Fidan emphasized the importance of intelligence and air power in combating ISIS, suggesting a regional platform as a potential solution if the US withdraws. He reflected on the PKK's 40-year campaign against Trkiye, which has resulted in over 40,000 deaths, and reiterated Trkiye's call for the PKK/YPG to disband or face military action.

The Foreign Minister also commented on US President Donald Trump's recent actions, which have unsettled Western leaders. He viewed these developments as a catalyst for Europe to establish its own security framework. Fidan expressed Trkiye's interest in participating in any new European security architecture, should NATO disband. He acknowledged the potential for future US administrations to reduce America's role in European security, emphasizing the need for Europe to adapt.
