Accra:The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, France, and the UK have called on the Palestinian Authority to reconsider its decision to postpone legislative and presidential elections. These elections, initially planned for November, have been delayed until September 2027.
According to Anadolu Agency, the ministers expressed their deep regret over Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's decision, warning that this delay would deprive Palestinians of another chance to vote and could further undermine trust in democratic institutions. It has been nearly two decades since the last elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council, with the 2021 elections also postponed.
The ministers acknowledged the significant challenges of conducting elections that meet international standards and include the participation of all eligible Palestinians. They praised the Central Elections Commission for its efforts in preparing for the elections.
Credible elections are seen as crucial to Abbas' and the Palestinian Authority's commitment to reforms, democratic renewal, and accountable governance, in accordance with the New York Declaration of July 2025. Strengthening Palestinian governance is deemed essential for establishing the institutional foundations necessary for a viable two-state solution, which is considered the only path to lasting peace and security for both Israel and Palestine.
The ministers urged the Palestinian Authority to take necessary actions to conduct legislative and presidential elections without further delay. They also called on Israel to avoid actions that could hinder the elections, including facilitating the necessary arrangements for all Palestinians to participate.
