Budapest: Former Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced his resignation from parliament on Wednesday after accepting an international position with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD.
According to Anadolu Agency, Szijjarto revealed his decision through a post on the US social media platform Facebook, stating, "I have submitted my resignation from my parliamentary mandate. The reason is that I have received a highly prestigious offer from one of the world's leading companies to fill an international position." He further disclosed that he would immediately assume his new role at BYD as the head of external relations and new business development.
Szijjarto praised BYD, calling it "one of the greatest success stories of the automotive industry over the past two decades" and highlighting its status as "the world's leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles." His career in Hungarian politics began in various senior government positions, including serving as Prime Minister Viktor Orban's spokesperson and later as state secretary for foreign affairs and external economic relations. He held the position of Hungary's foreign minister from 2014 until 2026.
Throughout his tenure as foreign minister, Szijjarto was recognized as a staunch advocate for Chinese investment in Hungary, particularly in the electric vehicle sector. His new role at BYD is seen as a continuation of his commitment to fostering international relations and promoting the growth of new energy vehicles.
