France Advocates Collective EU Solution for Frozen Russian Assets Amid Belgian Resistance

Washington: France announced that European Union member states are expected to reach a unified decision on the utilization of frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, despite Belgium's opposition and ongoing technical discussions. French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking ahead of the EU Council meeting, expressed optimism about finding a collaborative approach with Belgium and other EU partners to address the issue.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron emphasized the importance of collective efforts and calm discussions to resolve the differences. He acknowledged that although the current proposals are not ready for a vote, there is progress being made. Macron conveyed a positive outlook on future financial support for Ukraine, even as Belgium remains resistant to some options. He urged against internal divisions, stressing the need for respect and dialogue among EU members to find a technical solution.

In a shift to trade matters, Macron underscored France's steadfast opposition to finalizing the EU-Mercosur agreement under the present conditions. The agreement, which has been in negotiation since 1999, involves the EU and the Mercosur bloc, consisting of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Although a political agreement was reached in principle in 2019, it has yet to be ratified. Macron reiterated that France demands serious consideration of agricultural interests and refuses to sign the agreement hastily.

The EU-Mercosur trade deal is championed by Germany and Spain, who argue it could enhance European exports amid weak growth and increasing global competition. Supporters also see it as a strategic move to diversify trade partners in response to rising tariff pressures from the US.
