France and India Urged to Collaborate on AI Regulations, Says Macron

New delhi: French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday emphasized the necessity for France and India to collaborate in crafting global regulations for artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted that AI has emerged as a central arena of strategic competition, carrying significant geopolitical and economic consequences.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron, speaking at an AI summit in New Delhi, pointed out that the swift advancement of AI has led to increased concentration of power among major technology companies. He remarked, “AI has become a major field of strategic competition, and big tech got even bigger,” noting that the advancements in AI, graphics processing units, and semiconductor technologies are influencing global geopolitical and macroeconomic dynamics, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively.

Macron underscored that technological dominance by any single power bloc is not a predetermined outcome. “Hegemony from any quarter is not a fatality,” he stated, advocating for a path of innovation, independence, and strategic autonomy that he believes countries like France and India should pursue collectively.

The French President elaborated on a shared vision with India for “sovereign AI,” which he described as technology developed and governed in a manner that safeguards the planet while promoting inclusive economic growth. He stressed the importance of effective multilateralism, rules-based governance, and robust partnerships founded on shared values such as science, the rule of law, and global equilibrium.

Macron urged for immediate and concrete actions to enhance the sustainability, efficiency, and accessibility of AI. He called for targeted funding, safeguards to prevent misuse, and international cooperation to develop safer and more sustainable AI systems.
