Paris:France is advocating for significant reforms and strengthening of the United Nations by the next secretary-general, as stated by Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Barrot articulated France's expectations for a future UN leader, emphasizing that the individual should aim to reform and fortify the organization rather than undermine it. During a session with the French Senate, Barrot stressed that efforts by major powers to weaken or paralyze the UN would not be tolerated by France.
Barrot highlighted the founding purpose of the United Nations, which is to promote peace, development, and human rights. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation and multilateralism in addressing global threats such as war, artificial intelligence, climate change, and pandemics.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, France is actively pursuing reforms to enhance the legitimacy and representativeness of the organization. Barrot also mentioned a French initiative aimed at limiting the use of veto powers by permanent members of the Security Council. This initiative is intended to safeguard civilians in conflict areas such as Sudan, Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, and Iran when they face targeted threats.
