Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has ruled out lifting sanctions against Russia despite escalating tensions in the Middle East. Macron emphasized that the current geopolitical situation does not warrant a change in France’s stance on sanctions against Russia, particularly amidst ongoing support for Ukraine.
According to Anadolu Agency, Macron made these remarks following a videoconference with G7 leaders, where he underscored the importance of maintaining focus on Ukraine while addressing rising tensions in the Middle East. He highlighted the need for a coordinated international effort to ensure the free passage of ships through critical maritime routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as a “theater of war.”
Macron outlined that the G7 is taking steps to boost production among all major producers and engage with various countries to prevent export restrictions. At the national level, France is conducting checks to ensure that the situation does not lead to unjustified price hikes.
During a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Macron further emphasized the need for coordination to work toward de-escalation in the Middle East while protecting nationals and ensuring maritime security. He expressed appreciation for the Netherlands’ engagement in dialogue on France’s approach to nuclear deterrence.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa, in coordination with G7 partners, are seeking to address the escalating situation in Iran and the broader Middle East. They stressed the importance of keeping energy flows moving, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for the global economy.
The decision by the International Energy Agency to release 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves was welcomed by Macron, as it is expected to help stabilize global energy supplies. The G7’s involvement in this decision highlights the importance of international collaboration in managing energy markets during times of crisis.
The complex geopolitical situation has further been strained by recent military activities, including joint strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, which have led to significant casualties. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted a critical trade route for global oil and liquefied natural gas, further complicating the situation.
