Seville: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday described the resurgence of trade wars and tariffs as an "aberration" during a significant development conference in Seville. Macron emphasized the negative impact of such economic measures on global progress, especially for nations at the beginning stages of economic growth.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron delivered his remarks at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, held in Seville, the capital of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia. He urged the global community to "rethink" and "support" the World Trade Organization and to align it with broader goals, such as combating inequality and climate change.

Macron advocated for restoring freedom and fairness in international trade, which he argued should take precedence over the imposition of tariffs and barriers. He criticized such measures as tools of blackmail rather than mechanisms for achieving economic balance.

The French President highlighted that tariff wars harm all parties involved and undermine efforts to finance development. He also pointed out the detrimental effects of the withdrawal of American financial support on the international economic landscape.

Moreover, Macron addressed the growing pressures on public finances in both middle-income and wealthier nations. He noted that these pressures impose "greater constraints" on their capacity to fund international solidarity efforts.
