Gaza City:Palestinians gathered at the fishermen's port west of Gaza City on Thursday in solidarity with a planned global strike by port workers. The protest was against the use of supply chains to support Israel's war on the Gaza Strip.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the gathering came ahead of labor actions scheduled for Friday involving more than 25 unions representing workers at 113 ports across 22 countries and territories. The planned actions include work stoppages and demonstrations calling for an end to the transportation of weapons and military equipment through civilian ports to conflict zones.
Participants in the Gaza rally carried messages of solidarity with port workers and seafarers in recognition of their actions against the use of civilian facilities to support Israeli military operations. Zakaria Bakr, president of the General Union of Fishing and Marine Production Workers, emphasized the challenges faced by Palestinian fishermen, who have been unable to access the sea for more than three years. Bakr urged the global port workers and seafarers to continue their solidarity actions.
Nour Saad, spokesperson for the Sumud activities, highlighted the rally's opposition to the use of ports and supply chains in support of Israeli military operations. She stated that the global labor actions aim to redirect public resources and funds towards meeting people's needs instead of supporting war economies and armament.
The rally occurs amid ongoing Israeli restrictions that prevent Palestinian fishermen from working, contributing to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Since October 2023, Israel's war on the Gaza Strip, with US support, has resulted in the deaths of more than 74,000 Palestinians and injuries to over 175,000, predominantly women and children, while approximately 90% of the enclave's infrastructure has been destroyed, according to Palestinian figures.
