German Journalist Aboard Freedom Flotilla Insists Mission to Gaza Must Persist Despite Israeli Attacks

London: Anna Liedtke, a German journalist aboard the Conscience vessel of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition en route to Gaza, emphasizes that the mission must persist despite Israeli attacks on the aid fleet. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, comprising international civil society groups, has repeatedly attempted to break Israel's blockade of Gaza since 2010, aiming to highlight the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

According to Anadolu Agency, Israeli naval forces recently attacked and seized vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla, detaining over 470 activists from more than 50 countries. The flotilla was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge the Israeli blockade.

The Conscience, one of the 11 vessels in the flotilla, rejoined the fleet after undergoing repairs and maintenance following an Israeli attack off Malta on May 2. The 68-meter-long ship carries journalists, doctors, and activists. Liedtke, who joined the mission from Germany after earlier boats were attacked, expressed her determination to continue the journey.

Liedtke stated her belief in the importance of continuing the mission, noting that it provides hope to the people in Gaza. She highlighted the significance of challenging Israel's naval restrictions and mentioned that the presence of the flotilla temporarily allowed fishermen to fish without interference from Israeli naval ships.

Liedtke also emphasized the presence of numerous journalists and doctors on board, underscoring that the conflict's impact on these professions is profound. She noted that the mission's continuation serves as a powerful statement against the ongoing challenges faced by Gaza, asserting that the aid efforts and global attention must persist.
