Ankara: A German-Palestinian political activist on Wednesday criticized Adidas for using a retired Israeli soldier to promote its "single shoe" for amputees at a time when a large number of civilians in Gaza have lost limbs due to Israel's relentless attacks.
According to Anadolu Agency, Ramsis Kilani expressed his concerns in an exclusive interview, highlighting that the soldier involved is part of an army under investigation for crimes against humanity and suspected genocide. Kilani argued that participating in such promotional activities while being involved in war crimes is problematic and reflects a broader strategy by the Israeli government to legitimize itself through sponsorships and cultural ties.
Kilani condemned the controversial ad campaign by Adidas, a German brand, as an attempt to 'whitewash' Israeli crimes. He asserted that such campaigns aim to cover up various crimes committed by Israel and improve its poor global reputation. Kilani emphasized the necessity of rejecting these campaigns and compared the situation to the global treatment of apartheid South Africa.
Adidas faces increasing boycott calls after choosing Shalev Biton, a former Israeli soldier who lost a leg in Gaza, as the face of its 'single-shoe service' campaign. This decision has led to scrutiny over Adidas' global image and operations. In response, Adidas stated that the campaign was developed locally in Israel and not part of its global strategy. Adidas Arabia apologized and acknowledged regional sensitivities.
Kilani further criticized Germany's cooperation with Israel, particularly in the military sector, accusing Berlin of being an accomplice in Israeli crimes. He mentioned that over 80% of Germans oppose military cooperation with Israel, suggesting that Adidas' actions contradict the majority opinion in Germany. Kilani advocated for a boycott against Adidas and supported the BDS campaign, urging political pressure on companies that support Israel and its actions.
