Germany Demands Clarification from Israel Over Treatment of Gaza Aid Activists

Germany: Germany on Friday demanded "clarification" from Israel on the mistreatment of German activists of the Gaza aid flotilla, calling "the accusations absolutely serious." According to Anadolu Agency, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, Josef Hinterseher, expressed Germany's position during a press briefing in Berlin. "The treatment of the activists, including German citizens-as we only learned yesterday-is, in our view, also totally unacceptable. We unequivocally condemn this action and demand transparency in the investigation," Hinterseher stated. Hinterseher emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting, "From our perspective, the allegations that have been raised are extremely serious, and for that reason we expect a thorough and transparent investigation." He also mentioned that eight German activists from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, who sustained injuries, arrived in Istanbul on Thursday evening, with one individual requiring hospitalization. The German diplomat highlighted that the a ctivists were denied consular access during their detention by Israel, which he described as illegal. Hinterseher also criticized Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for his actions post-detention, labeling them as 'unacceptable behavior.' A video posted by Ben-Gvir on social media showed him taunting pro-Palestinian activists, who were zip-tied and forced to kneel after being detained by Israeli forces in international waters. This video ignited outrage both within Israel and internationally.
