Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Iran on Tuesday to stop its destabilizing activities in the region and to not extend the conflict into Iraq through its proxies. Speaking at a joint news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Berlin, Merz said the two leaders discussed regional developments, including the impact of the US-Iran war and the Hormuz blockade.

According to Anadolu Agency, Merz emphasized the need for Tehran to cease its support for proxies across the region, highlighting the daily consequences of such actions. He called on Iran to refrain from further extending the conflict into Iraq and insisted that Iran must end the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and halt its military nuclear program.

Merz expressed Berlin's support for the Iraqi government's initiative to disarm Iranian-backed militias and its efforts to restore peace and security in the region. The discussions also covered developments in the Red Sea, where the Houthis have expanded their influence along Yemen's coastline and seized Mayyun Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Merz noted the strategic control the Houthis have around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and their attacks on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, which exacerbate the situation in international energy markets. He stressed the importance of the international community not allowing the Houthis to hold shipping in the Red Sea hostage and mentioned ongoing consultations within the European Union and with regional partners to end the conflict.

Addressing questions about Germany's military advisory and training mission in Iraq, Merz confirmed that it would conclude at the end of the month at Iraq's request but expressed Germany's willingness to continue military cooperation in different forms if desired by the Iraqi government.
