Berlin: Japan on Monday continued the evacuation of residents living on the southwestern Tokara Island chain amid recurring earthquakes, with weather authorities warning of stronger tremors.

According to Anadolu Agency, the evacuation of local residents came as the island chain continued to be struck by earthquakes since late June. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that Akusekijima islet experienced a magnitude 5.1 quake early in the morning, following the intensifying seismic activity in the area since late June.

Since June 21, the region has experienced more than 1,500 tremors. Despite the recurring seismic activity, no tsunami warning has been issued for the region. Meteorological records indicate that the area was similarly affected by many tremors in both 2021 and 2023.
