Gustav Klimt’s ‘Litzlbergkeller’ Anticipated to Reach $80 Million at New York Auction

New York:A landscape painting by renowned Austrian artist Gustav Klimt is expected to command between $60 million and $80 million at an upcoming Christie's auction in New York. The artwork, titled "Litzlbergkeller" and created between 1915 and 1916, will be the centerpiece of Christie's 20th Century Evening Sale on November 17.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the painting last appeared at auction in May 1997, where it sold for $14.7 million at Sotheby's in New York, setting an auction record for Klimt at the time.

The piece, commissioned by Austrian banker and art patron Otto Primavesi, illustrates a brewery and inn located on the northern shore of Lake Attersee in Austria. This location was a favored summer retreat for Klimt from 1900 until his death in 1918. The painting is distinguished by its lush green foliage and shimmering water reflections, showcasing Klimt's decorative artistry combined with abstract elements.

Previously owned by art dealer and collector Serge Sabarsky, co-founder of New York's Neue Galerie, "Litzlbergkeller" has been on long-term loan to the Leopold Museum in Vienna in recent years. Klimt's work continues to achieve significant auction records, with his "Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer" setting a high of $236.4 million in November 2025. Another landscape, "Birch Forest," was sold for $104.5 million at Christie's in 2022.

Before its appearance at the auction, "Litzlbergkeller" will be exhibited in Hong Kong from October 27 to 29, and then at Christie's Rockefeller Center galleries in New York starting November 7.
