Head of Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government Congratulates Iran’s New Supreme Leader

Erbil: Nechirvan Barzani, the head of Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), on Tuesday congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran's new supreme leader, according to a KRG statement.

According to Anadolu Agency, Barzani extended his "warmest congratulations" to Khamenei and the people of Iran on his election as Supreme Leader. He expressed his wishes for Khamenei's success in his new role.

Barzani emphasized the importance of fostering historical and friendly relations between the Kurdish Region of Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran. He highlighted the aim for mutual benefit and the promotion of peaceful coexistence throughout the region.

Mojtaba Khamenei was announced as the successor to his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following the latter's death in a US-Israeli airstrike last week. The attack has led to increased regional tensions.

Escalations have occurred since the joint US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and more than 10,000 injuries. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries that host US military assets.
