Gaza: Heavy rains in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the death of at least 10 people over the past 24 hours, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). Thousands of displaced Palestinian families are currently seeking refuge in tents, struggling to withstand harsh winter conditions with minimal protection.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of WHO, expressed concern on social media about the dire situation. He highlighted the risks posed by exposure to the elements, inadequate water and sanitation facilities, and overcrowded living conditions. These factors are expected to contribute to a rise in acute respiratory infections, including influenza, as well as hepatitis and diarrheal diseases.

The WHO has been facing significant challenges in delivering essential medical supplies to Gaza. Tedros noted that many laboratory reagents and diagnostic equipment have been denied entry, as they are classified as dual-use items. He emphasized the urgent need for these materials to enter the region, as they are crucial for detecting, responding to, and treating disease outbreaks in a timely manner.

The situation in Gaza is further exacerbated by ongoing conflict. Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of more than 70,300 individuals, predominantly women and children, and have injured over 171,000. Despite a truce, the Israeli army has continued to violate the ceasefire, resulting in the deaths of at least 386 Palestinians and injuries to 1,018 since the agreement took effect on October 10.
