Riyadh:The Houthi group announced that it had targeted Saudi oil company Aramco in Riyadh using ballistic missiles and drones as a response to recent attacks on Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.
According to Anadolu Agency, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree stated in a televised announcement that the operation had "successfully achieved its objective" and resulted in fires at the targeted locations. Saree claimed that Sanaa and other provinces had suffered 60 airstrikes in the past day, with a total of 1,420 attacks attributed to Saudi Arabia.
He warned that the Houthis would counteract with measures such as "blockade with blockade, and escalation with escalation."
In contrast, Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen's government, described the Houthi assertions of targeting Riyadh as "misleading." He argued that the Houthis aim to divert attention from their losses and the growing discontent over their connections with foreign agendas causing chaos in Yemen.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government against the Houthi forces, who have maintained control of Sanaa and other regions since September 2014. In July, the Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, citing it as a response to a Saudi blockade on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, and have since focused on targeting the kingdom's energy infrastructure.
