Sanaa: Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced his support for renowned chess grandmaster Judit Polgar as a candidate for the presidency. He stated on Sunday that he plans to meet with Polgar on Monday to discuss the potential for her to assume the position.

According to Anadolu Agency, Magyar's backing comes after prominent figures from Hungary's scientific, cultural, and sporting communities sent a letter to Parliament Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer, suggesting Polgar for the presidential role. Magyar expressed the need for unity and peace in the country and emphasized the importance of having a president whom every Hungarian can proudly stand behind. He communicated these sentiments through a post on the US social media platform X.

Magyar intends to discuss with Polgar her willingness to serve the nation in this new capacity until Hungary's new constitution is adopted. He highlighted Polgar's achievements and widespread respect, which stem from her talent, hard work, resilience, and integrity rather than political affiliations.

Judit Polgar is highly regarded as the strongest female chess player in history, having led the women's world rankings for 26 consecutive years. Notably, she has also been ranked among the top 10 players in the overall global chess rankings. Polgar is an international grandmaster and a five-time Chess Olympiad champion, and she has received the Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen, the country's highest state honor. Additionally, she was recently elected as a fellow of Christ's College at the University of Cambridge.

The move to select a new president follows a constitutional amendment that brought an early end to President Tamas Sulyok's term.
