BUDAPEST: Hungary will reinstate border checks with Romania beginning January 1, as the latter joins the European Union's Schengen area by land. The move is aimed at preventing potential threats to public order and internal security, according to reports in the Hungarian press.
According to Anadolu Agency, Hungarian law enforcement sources have indicated that the decision to initiate border controls comes as a precautionary measure. Hungarian police have advised travelers entering the country from Romania to be prepared for random checks and to ensure they have the necessary documentation.
The Bucharest-based Libertatea newspaper reported that more than 30 border crossing points in Romania will be affected by the new border control measures. These points are set to be closed as Romania integrates into the Schengen area by land. Additionally, random checks will continue for six months at the Bulgaria-Romania border, indicating a mutual approach to border security between the two nations.
Romania and Bulgaria officially joined the Schengen area by land on December 12, marking a significant step in their European integration. However, the reinstatement of border checks by Hungary highlights ongoing concerns regarding border security in the region.
