New Delhi:Indian opposition lawmakers organized a protest march in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the alleged deletion of voters from electoral rolls.
According to Anadolu Agency, the protest follows a report highlighting concerns raised by two election commissioners regarding decisions on voter list revisions. This process began last year and has been implemented in multiple states, raising opposition allegations of voter removal.
The demonstration saw participation from various parties, including the Indian National Congress, with its President Mallikarjun Kharge stating that protests would continue to protect voting rights and freedoms. He emphasized the collective sentiment against the perceived disenfranchisement of voters.
The INDIA alliance, comprising over a dozen opposition parties, plans further protests on this issue. Security was heightened with barricades and personnel around the protest site, as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was seen near the Election Commission office.
The Congress party expressed defiance on social media, asserting that no votes would be silenced and calling for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party accused the Congress of inciting anarchy and spreading misinformation about the voter list revisions.
As protests unfolded, some lawmakers reported being detained and moved to undisclosed locations. Concurrently, India's Supreme Court is addressing petitions regarding the Chief Election Commissioner's actions. The country's last general election was in 2024, with the next scheduled for 2029.
