Washington: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with US President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday as the two nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic ties, now elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This marked Prabowo's first visit to the US since his inauguration on October 20. He also extended congratulations to US President-elect Donald Trump on his recent election victory, with a potential meeting forthcoming before Prabowo attends the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru. According to Anadolu Agency, Prabowo and Biden issued a joint statement after their meeting, committing to continue advancing a vision for an open, transparent, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific regional architecture, with ASEAN at the center, that upholds international law. They emphasized a shared commitment to promote peace and stability in Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region. In recent years, the focus has sharpened on countering China's influence, prompting the US and its allies to refer to the Asia-Pacific region as the Indo-Pacific. Prabowo's visit to the US is part of a multi-nation tour, which began in Beijing, where he signed deals valued at $10 billion. Following his visit to Peru for the APEC summit, Prabowo is scheduled to attend a G20 summit in Brazil. Biden stated that the US stands ready to assist the Indonesian government in its efforts to improve food security through sustainable agriculture. To support these initiatives, both leaders highlighted their commitment to promoting research collaboration at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainable farming practices. Furthermore, Biden expressed support for Indonesia's expedited accession bid to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The two leaders also pledged to cooperate on enhancing maritime security capabilities and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, as well as fishing linked to transnational organized crime.
